Mexican painting in the 19th century.

In the 19th century, Romantic painting was of great quality and began its academic work with novel themes with a tendency towards mexicanism.

Alongside the production of academic painting, the so – called “Popular” painting flourished wich, far from academicism, arose spontaneously. Their exponents depended more on their own skills than on their own knowledge.

Within the popular painting are the so- called votive offerings or altarpieces religious works dedicated to the virgin María or to the Saints, for the graces granted; these creations are usually made on small plates of small dimensions and with bright colors.

The space that was used as a canvas, represented a challege, because of its curvature the strokes had to be thought carefully. The wonderful thing about this work of art is that, if you go trough the space where the painting is, you will be able to appreciate incredible three-dimesional effects.
